A year after an emotional hospital visit during the final days of beloved Judge Frank Caprio’s life, his family has shared a deeply personal memory that shows just how far his influence extended beyond the courtroom.

The tribute centers on Raye Ann Johnson Seiger, a woman who grew up alongside the Caprio family and became so close to them that she was considered a second sister. Years of shared memories eventually led to an especially meaningful moment in 2022, when Seiger asked Judge Caprio to officiate her wedding. According to the family, he immediately accepted the honor and did so with tremendous joy.

Three years later, their roles had changed dramatically.

In a photograph recently shared on Judge Caprio’s official social media account, Seiger can be seen standing beside him in a hospital bed, gently holding his hand. The image was taken approximately one year ago, shortly before Caprio’s death, and has now become a powerful reminder for his family of the relationships he built throughout his life.

“Raye Ann Johnson Seiger grew up with our family, our second sister in every way that mattered,” the family wrote in the tribute. They recalled how, after Judge Caprio had been there for one of the happiest moments of Seiger’s life, she made sure she was there for him during one of his most difficult.

“She came to be by his side and held his hand with the closeness of a lifelong ‘thank you’ for everything we all have shared,” the post continued.

What made the moment especially memorable was Judge Caprio’s reaction. Despite being in the hospital and facing serious health problems, he smiled as Seiger stood beside him. For his family, that expression seemed to capture decades of friendship and affection in a single photograph.

“He smiled, and I saw decades of love in that moment,” the family wrote.

The scene carries additional meaning because of who Frank Caprio was to millions of people around the world. The longtime Providence, Rhode Island municipal judge became internationally famous through Caught in Providence, where videos of his courtroom interactions regularly went viral. Rather than gaining attention for harsh sentences or dramatic confrontations, Caprio became known for listening to the people standing before him and taking their individual circumstances into account.

His compassionate approach earned him the widely used nickname “the nicest judge in the world.” Caprio served as a Providence Municipal Court judge from 1985 until his retirement in 2023, and clips from his courtroom reached millions of viewers online.

 

Away from the cameras, however, the latest family tribute offers a much more intimate look at the man behind that public image.

Caprio announced in December 2023 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He continued to share updates about his treatment with followers, often thanking people around the world for their prayers and encouragement. In May 2024, he celebrated completing radiation treatment, but his health later declined. Shortly before his death, Caprio posted another message from the hospital saying he had suffered a setback and once again asked supporters to keep him in their prayers.

Judge Frank Caprio died on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88, following what his family described as a long battle with pancreatic cancer. His death prompted tributes from around the world, with many remembering him not simply as a judge, but as someone who demonstrated that compassion and authority did not have to be opposites.

The photograph with Seiger now adds another layer to that legacy.

In 2022, Judge Caprio had stood beside her as she began a new chapter of her life, officiating the wedding she had personally asked him to lead. Later, when he was the one who needed companionship, she returned to his side.

There was no courtroom audience and no viral television moment. It was simply two people whose families had shared decades together, holding hands in a hospital room.

For Caprio’s family, that is precisely why the photograph means so much.

It represents a relationship coming full circle — a woman who had grown up surrounded by the Caprio family returning years later to sit beside the man who had been part of so many important moments in her own life.

One year later, the family says the gratitude remains.

“Forever grateful she was there with us.”

For the millions who came to know Judge Caprio through brief courtroom clips, the story is also a reminder that the compassion viewers saw on screen was only one part of his life. Behind the famous courtroom bench was a father, husband, grandfather and friend whose relationships stretched across generations.
